A New Year
Many times people make lots of resolutions for a new year and some are good and some aren’t so good, some we try to keep and some we forget about as soon as we make them. So what are resolutions for and why do we make them?
Resolutions are something we make on our own initiative; most people aren’t pushed into or talked into making them. No we make them on our own and often with the best intentions so why do we break them so quickly? It would probably be fair to say that most resolutions are made because we feel guilty about something, we feel obliged to do it, know we should, or it is may be an area we need help in. If these are our primary reasons for making resolutions it is no wonder they aren’t kept, honestly they aren’t all that strong and will fail us at the slightest bump in the road. So even though we may have the best intentions at the beginning if our purpose and vision isn’t strong we are bound to give up sooner or later.
So I have to ask, should we make resolutions or is there another way to achieve the things we want to? May I suggest setting goals for your self and in doing so really think through the things you want to work on. A goal is keeps the end result for which we are working in mind at all times rather then just the here and now. So in setting your goals think about not only what you want to work on but why you want to, how you are going to do it, and is it achievable as well as can I do it on my own or do I need help. I myself don’t want to set goals so high that I can’t reach them that will just be discouraging and make it easy to give up.
For myself this year I have thought of a few things I would really like to change. My goals are more areas in my life I would like to see changes in or improvement in.
Area 1. To discipline myself to spent time daily in God’s word. Since having a baby this has really gone by the wayside and I think it is showing in my life. I am still thinking through the how on this but hope to come up with something soon.
Area 2. Quality time with my hubby. It is so easy to get caught up in the every day routine that we often forget to spend good time together even just to laugh and share our thoughts. We are going to try to take time each night after Samuel goes to bed to do this.
Area 3. Ok so this may be one of those areas every one makes resolutions on but it is something I have been trying to work on for a while but only half halfheartedly. I would really like to loose a bit more of the extra weight I gained from being pregnant. My goal is to eat more healthy and work out regularly.
I don't know if any one will read this but to me the thing that is important is to make the goals, figure out how I am going to carry them out and then stay accountable to do them. So if any one reads this and wants to ask me how it is going they are more them welcome to.
